Required run rate calculator

Work out the required run rate in a chase from the target, the current score and the overs left.

Formula

Required run rate = (target − current score) × 6 ÷ balls remaining.

Worked examples

  1. South Africa chased a target of 435 in 49.5 overs on 12 Mar 2006, the highest successful ODI chase in the data. At the start of the chase they needed 435 × 6 ÷ 300 = 8.70 an over.
  2. Target 181, score 120 with 7 overs left: 61 × 6 ÷ 42 = 8.71.
  3. Need 30 off 3.3 overs: 30 × 6 ÷ 21 balls = 8.57.

How it works

The required run rate tells a chasing side how fast it must score from now on. Comparing it with the current run rate shows whether the chase is on track.

The target is one more than the first-innings total, unless a rain rule has revised it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the required run rate?
The runs still needed divided by the overs left, using balls for accuracy: runs needed × 6 ÷ balls left.
